This is not an argument for or against these writings as to whether or not the Protestant Reformation was correct in removing these writings from the Canon (the official list) of Holy Scripture.
When I was a child I discovered these writings. And, while I understood that they were not “Holy Scripture” as far as my denomination was concerned, I was fascinated by the stories.
One of my favorite tales is Tobit. I also found that the additional material for Esther was most helpful. The Maccabean histories are quite interesting. And those events occurred after Alexander the Great. Compared to Moses, it’s recent history.
Anyway, I think Christians of all denominations should be familiar with these writings. Not that they are “inspired by the Holy Spirit” but that, if the original church authorities thought them worthwhile, we should at least know something about them.
